Can you address the common fears about hypnosis?

Many people today are still scared off by the old, witchcraft like images of hypnosis, depicted in movies and on television, or clubs. These images have caused people to confuse “suggestibility & requests: with “gullibility & requests:. The biggest misconception about hypnosis involves fear that one can be made to do something against one’s will or be brainwashed. The truth is that hypnotists can’t get people to do anything they don’t want to do. Other people believe that being hypnotized to be put into a coma-like state, but that’s also not true. A hypnotized person can hear everything that is being said and maintains total control at all times.
Who can be hypnotized?
Generally every normal person is hypnotizable, except for people with severe mental disorders. With your cooperation and commitment, you can expect excellent results with hypnosis. Confidence in your hypnotist and freedom from fear, are also important factors.
How will I know I am hypnotized?
Most people cannot tell the difference between a hypnotized state and a awakening state. Some people feel relaxed and lethargic, others feel light. If you’re a little skeptical, don’t worry. Most clients are a little skeptical at first, but lost the skepticism when they noticed inexplicable changes in their daily habits or behaviors.
How does hypnosis work?
Our minds work on two levels, conscious and subconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind. The subconscious controls our habits. In hypnosis the conscious mind is subdued, while the subconscious becomes more aware. Suggestions given by the hypnotist are readily accepted in this altered state. Also, the subconscious is not subject to time. This is why clients often state that habits seem “easy” to break after hypnosis.
Is a hypnotized person asleep?
No! You are neither asleep nor unconscious. You are in full possession of all faculties, even more keenly so than when in a "normal" state. You are capable of ending the hypnotic state any time you wish.
Can I be made to do something I don’t want to do?
No! You are completely aware of all suggestion and will simply refuse to do anything contrary to your wishes. You may even come out of the hypnotic state, in your refusal.
Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis, per se, is no more dangerous than natural sleep. It will not weaken the will, damage the nervous system, or in any way adversely affect the physical and mental well-being of an individual.
Is hypnosis habit forming?
No. Regardless of how many times a person has been hypnotized, he is never a "slave" to the hypnotist, nor under his control. He can reject hypnosis anytime he wishes, contrary to "Dr. Svengali-Trilby" fiction.
Does one go into a trance so that the hypnotist controls him like a robot?
Not at all. The subject is aware of everything around him and has complete control over himself at all times. Forget what you may have seen on the stage. Ethical hypnosis is entirely different and safe.
Are weak-minded subjects better than strong-minded ones?
No. A weak-minded subject who resists suggestions is a poor subject. A strong-minded subject who cooperates is a good subject. Success with hypnosis has to do with your ability to listen and follow directions. Therefore weak-mindedness or strong-mindedness has nothing to do with it.
